6 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD WEIGHT TRAIN

Unsure about weight training? Here are 6 reasons why you should include weight training in your fitness journey:

  1. STRENGTH: Improves overall muscular strength via increased force and power outputs. Weight training increases muscular strength by making the muscles work against a weight or a force. The body will adapt to the stimuli and overtime the body will be able to consistently increase the weight or load lifted. Improving your overall strength can improve your quality of life! 

  2. BONE DENSITY: Increase bone mineral density! By stressing the bones through weight training activities, the body’s response is to activate bone-forming cells called osteoblasts to generate new bone tissue, therefore, increasing the overall density of the bone. 

  3. CONNECTIVE TISSUE: Weight training not only improves strength and muscle size, it also strengthens joints, ligaments, and tendons! When the muscles are overloaded through weight training, the body starts to synthesize more collagen fibers - the fibers that make up our tendons, ligaments, and joints. 

  4. NEUROMUSCULAR DEVELOPMENT: Weight training causes adaptive changes within the nervous system. This leads to improvements in motor control, proprioception, and balance issues.  

  5. PSYCHOLOGY: Weight training also has benefits for improved mental health. It has been shown to improve mental state/mood, improve confidence levels, decrease feelings of anxiety and depression, and improve quality of sleep

  6. REDUCED RISK FOR INJURY: Consistent and structured weight training leads to increased resilience. Thus, one is less likely to injure themselves due to stronger muscles and decreased muscular imbalances.
